I think asharp is confused about the country or legal attache role in foreign countries.  As Heisenberg correctly pointed out, agents, whether they are from the ATF, DEA, FBI, or USSS, act only as a liaison between the host nation and the U.S. for the purposes of coordinating intentional investigations where the U.S. is a party, or providing training, and exchanging intelligence regarding national security matters.  Protecting embassies and embassy personnel is the responsibility of the State Department Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) and the USMC Marine Security Guards (MSG).  I am also confused as to asharp's assertion that there is an "Oklahoma City cover up."  Nor do I think that Senator Grassely and Congressman Issa (he is not a senator) will pay scant attention to the closure of the Bogota Office.

that's "international investigations."  I hate auto correct.

I cannot believe ATF is closing the Bogota, Colombia office. Although I guess I should not be surprised, as I also heard there were TWO attempted terrorist bomb attacks on the US Embassy.  ATF completely failed to take any action to secure the safety and well being of Americans abroad.  Precious lives are at risk - yet ATF sees fit to close the office rather than take action to secure the safety of US Embassy officials and employees.  Sounds like another Oklahoma City cover-up to me.  I am sure Senator Chuck Grassley and Senator Darell Issa have some thoughts on ATF's latest cover-up.

Ditto.

Lyon, The Hague and almost anywhere in Canada -- yeah, real hardship Posts of Duty.

Those are cool spots but I really think the OCONUS spots in Mexico are very dangerous.  I would mose def consider serving there to be a hardship.

I do not intend to be disrespectful but I'm not sure I understood this post.  I may be wrong but ATF probably had one or two agents in Bogota.  I don't know how they could secure an embassy.  I would like to believe that if there was a catastrophe or threatening event ATF Agents would respond heroically like they did on 9/11 and others but what am I missing?  I'm not tracking the OKC cover-up allegation either.  ???

You're kidding right? ATF has no law enforcement role outside of the USA. These oversea posts are merely liaison spots for well connected GS-14 and GS-15 personnel. Now that we have e-Trace, there's hardly a need for an international presence. With cities inside of the USA falling apart and crime running rampant in some places like Detroit, Newark, East St. Louis and Baltimore, among DOZENS of others, I'd rather see our focus be directed to violent crime HERE. Enough overseas posting for supervisors when we hardly have 4 agents in some busy cities.

By the way- the safety of Americans overseas is State Department's lane- not ours. Grassley wont give 2 shits about us leaving Columbia. He'd probably be pissed that we're still in Lyon, The Hague and Canada.

Just my 2 cents.
